Nine Euro Countries’ Ratings Are Cut

On Friday, Standard & Poor’s cut the ratings on nine of the 17 European countries that use the euro currency. France and Austria lost their coveted AAA ratings, which were lowered one notch to AA+, and Italy and Spain had their ratings cut by two notches. Germany, Finland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands all retained their AAA status, while the ratings of Portugal and Cyprus were cut to junk. Related Article »

Reports of a ratings downgrade for France kept a lid on the Dow which ended nearly 1/2 percent lower at 12,422. The S&P action, leaked early in the day, includes a one notch cut for France which is no longer triple-A, as well as cuts for Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The action also includes affirmation of Germany's triple-A rating. The euro sank more than 1 percent to 1.2670 against the dollar.

US economic news ended a downbeat week on a mixed note with exports in the international trade report a disappointment but with consumer sentiment extending its lengthening run of gains. Demand for the safety of US Treasuries rose on the day with the 30-year yield down 6 basis points to 2.91 percent. Light crude ended the week over $99 with gold at $1,640.
